These two posts inspired me to make this colored-pencil roll-up. I think I'm going to make a few more and give them as gifts for the holidays. I quilted the background and did a traditional binding, but may try a few other (simpler) techniques with the others.
I'm having a great crafty weekend - I hope that feeling will continue once I bite the bullet and start quilting the bear paws!

your rainbow gifts are marvelous. You're so brave to try a zipper - I'm a big coward when it comes to those.
You're having such a productive time- the pencil roll is adorable! And the bag is sweet, too!
What a great gift for the traveling artist *s*
This is like candy, great idea.
Lovely pencil roll - could you post where you got the directions?
Love the pencil roll! Would be great for my grandaughters. Mind if I borrow it?
I think I may make this for my niece for her Christmas present. She is a bit young, but I think she would appreciate it.
Wow your fabric selections are fantastic and so is the colour of the zip in your bag! Gorgeous and great work too.
LOL at description of your soup too!
Wonder if you could combine the pencil holder with the zipper bag? Unzip on 3 edges and fold it out? Hmmmm....
Sorry, I'm just a troublemaker!
It's a beautiful pencil roll - love the fabrics and the colours!
Gorgeous Gorgeous! I love the fabrics. Could it be converted into a knitting needle holder or perhaps a holder for scissors (which I'm always loosing!)?
That would be a great gift! I love your bear paws quilt!
So colorful, Jen! These are cute :) and brilliant. (Spain-inspired?)
Hi Hedgie, your colored pencil bags are a gift that is suitable for all ages! What a nice gift idea. And I love your rainbow bag..perfect zippers are highly overrated! Hugs, Finn

I did one of these with DD1 recently - we didn't quilt it or use a traditional binding - we did it envelope/pillowcase style, which was pretty quick. The slowest part was the dividers for the pencils - most of the rest of it, she did herself (age 10).
It's lovely!!!!
It' a great idea for Christmas....
