Those Extra Es

I mentioned that I had two extra Es after 'writing' on the back of the Tea TATW wedding wall hanging, so I thought I'd share what I did with them.

I'm working on a life quilt - making one diamond with fabrics from every quilt I make, so that someday I can sew them all together as a record of my quiltmaking life. I am foundation piecing onto precut muslin diamonds - I forget how many I cut, but they have 9.25" sides and will make a twin-sized quilt. Sometimes I use a leftover block, sometimes I just add the scraps in a crumb block fashion.

I chose diamonds after seeing a beautiful brightly colored string quilt made from diamonds in a book of antique quilts. I especially liked that the edges of the quilt were a zigzag and weren't filled in with triangles to square up the quilt (maybe you've noticed I'm not really a border person).

Here are the diamonds from the finished citrus quilts and from the MQW love beads that is still being quilted.

I love the diamonds - what fantastic colours.

The green one looks a bit like one of Tonya's Egyptian eyes (vbg).

I've been doing somewhat the same thing, with a slightly different twist. I make 6.5" string blocks, foundation pieced on muslin. Sometimes I have to make 3 or 4 blocks to get all the fabrics included. I write the name of the quilt & the year I made it on the front of each block. I haven't done it for a couple of years - I should get back to it! Love the colors of your Citrus quilt!

My goodness - what a lovely blog. You the eye of an artist! The last two photos are marvelous -- it doesn't even matter what they are, they are beautiful.

Hi Hedgie, what a terrific idea to make that diamond shape using fabrics from each quilt you make. I think that will be a terrific quilt someday. You are doing a very artistic job with the fabrics and ideas..*VBS*
I can't think of anything you could machine quilt into the love beads, but I think I would be tempted to put the hoop on and do a few little things by hand, in perle cotton or embroidery floss. just little whimsical things maybe, a couple of X's and O's for hugs and kisses..or a smiley face? A heart? I've used my cookie cutters to get simple shapes onto a baby quilt with good results.

Wow, I love the idea of your life quilt. It is going to be a stunning reflection of your work. I'm jealous - bit too late for me to start ;-) I love crumb/utility pieced quilts too. There's a pic of one in a book that I was just about to go look for, before I remembered it's packed up and gone...
