Tree Skirt

Patti recently posted a picture of a beautiful tree skirt she made, so I thought I'd post a picture of the simple one I made a few years ago for my grandparents and my aunt. It was the first time I foundation-pieced anything (on muslin) and the first time I bound anything curved. I also used gold thread to quilt it by machine - the only time I've used anything but basic cotton. The silly thing is that most of the quilting is in the ditch! I think I figured out how silly that was halfway through, because there is also some more visible zig-zagging going on. A zig-zag was the only decorative stitch on my machine then and I definitely hadn't tried any free-motion at that point! The pattern is Thimbleberries Star Dance Tree Skirt, but I left off the appliqued stars (it's no longer on the Thimbleberries website, but there seem to be several of these patterns available on ebay these days.) It was a fun project - I should make one for myself one of these days!

There are a lot of bird fabrics in there, since their house is full of all things bird. Actually, I was thinking of organizing a bird fabric swap some time in 2007 - any interest?

A good idea to sew strips in a tree-skirt. I have been working on a tree-skirt some years ago with santa and reindeers. It´s an UFO ... and there is no time to end the work. Well, next year is christmas again, isn´t it... smile.

Cute! Binding scallops is a dog, too.

Hey Hedgey :O)....is that a full sized tree skirt.. that is just real pretty... I could see one for me in velvets!

What would this bird swap involve? Swapping material or blocks?

My cookbook didn't come today, maybe tomorrow!

Very pretty! I love the Christmas bird fabrics. I've not looked at Christmas fabrics for years, so I've never seen any like that.

Cute and different with the cool scallops. Funny how we make these cool things and then give them away when we need one too.

Like the idea of an 'international' swap but don't have or need any bird fabrics.

Your medallion is really looking good. Must admit I have a thing for hexagons and english paper piecing in general. Don't actually have a finished project but lots of basted hexagons around the place!

Very pretty tree skirt. What kind of bird fabric were you thinking about? I don't have much bird fabric right now - but I do have a couple of birds - cockatiels :)

Beautiful tree skirt. This reminded me that I should have made a new one for myself. The old one is not so nice anymore, and now when I have moved into a new house.... but the time.....it's only a few weeks left for christmas.

I like the tree skirt, very pretty. I'd be up for a bird fabric swap. We have some nice local fabric with African birds on it, but it'd need to be middle of the year. I've pretty much blown my budget with swaps lately. *vbs*

I love your tree skirt! Were the scallops hard to bind? Thanks for stopping by my sweat shop earlier.

Wonderful tree skirt! When I get our tree up I'll post a photo of mine: I use a red felt poodle skirt that I made for a costume one year. I measured myself wrong and it's too big for me but it fits the tree great!

I might be interested in a bird fabric swap, too - but not if it involves blocks - got too much of that going on and really need to learn to say "no" sometimes... *g* I love the idea of swapping with others around the world, though.
